Sustainable Forestry

Participating and supporting companies must adhere to the following guidelines on fee ownership forestlands and promote them on all forestlands.

 

Forest Management Guidelines:

  • Encourage prompt and proper reforestation.
  • Protect water quality through implementation of NYS Silvicultural BMPs.
  • Support wildlife habitat diversity within timber management program.
  • Improve the visual impact of harvesting.
  • Identify and manage special sites within context of timber management program.
  • Forest management program should consider and contribute to biodiversity.
  • Promote the efficient use of wood products.
  • When using forest chemicals to ensure forest health and productivity, companies must meet or exceed legal requirements.

Wood Supply Guidelines:

Participating and supporting companies must adhere to the following principles for wood supply:

  • Promote the training of loggers with the supply system.
  • Promote forester involvement with supply system harvesting activities. Such as: a. Planning before the harvest operations; b. Technical assistance during and after harvests
  • Clearly define and implement policies, programs, and plans to ensure that mill inventories and procurement practices do not compromise adherence to the sustainable forestry principles.
