National Highlights
  • Over 60 million acres enrolled;  largest program in the US.
  • In 2000, established the Sustainable Forestry Board (SFB) to oversee all aspects of the program.  Sixty percent of the 15 member board are from diverse interest groups including: Izaak Walton League, Conservation International, the Conservation Fund, the University of Washington and the Society of American Foresters. The board was established to improve the credibility of the program along with the continuation of the External Review Board.
  • Program growth continues with the licensing of non-industrial land, some public (county) and academic properties.
  • Program credibility is being addresses through the further development and member participation in third party verification.
  • Currently developing product labeling capability.
  • Currently developing a national communication campaign to improve the recognition and the public awareness of the SFIsm program.
  • In 2000, a Mutual Recognition Agreement was signed between the American Tree Farm System and the SFIsm Program.

New York State Highlights
  • Twenty-six members managing over 863,000 acres in New York State.
  • The State Implementation Committee includes representation from landowner groups, timber harvesters and the NYS-DEC as well as member companies.
  • In 2000, 4 subcommittees were formed to help the SIC be more effective.  These subcommittees are Direction, Quality Assurance, Inconsistent Practices and Outreach (public and landowner).
  • A sign program was initiated as part of the process to address inconsistent practices and as a communication tool.
  • In 2000, the SIC solidified its commitment to logger education by contributing 14% of its budget to New York Logger Training, Inc. This will be an annual SFI budget item.  New York Logger Training and the NY-SIC met in March and agreed to work together on mutual goals.
  • In 2000, the fourth annual industry survey was conducted.  The results are being tabulated into a one or two page summary sheet that will be distributed to legislators and other target audiences.
