Forest products play an important and vital role in our
lives. Their contributions are all around us. Steinway Pianos, fine
furniture from companies like Ethan Allen and Harden Furniture are among
the many quality wood products made right here in New York. Going to the
ballpark? Many of the baseball bats you see are made right here in New
York! And, we provide many fine grade papers from trees grown right in our
own back yard!
While we don’t often stop and wonder about how these
products got to our homes it is reassuring to know that there are many
people, here in New York and elsewhere, who are working hard to assure that
we are able to enjoy these products and know that they come from healthy,
well managed forests.
Did you know that there are more acres of forests today in
New York than there was at the turn of the Century? Not this Century -- the
last one! New York has more forestland than was present in 1800!
It’s an air conditioner, it’s a water purifier – it’s a New York forest!
Yes, that’s right. Our forests provide some of the cleanest air and
drinking water in the world. Many of New York’s municipal watersheds are
protected by managing the forests around them.
Whitetail deer, wild turkey, black bears, river otters and
wild moose are only a few of the many species of wildlife that abound in
New York’s forests. The reason we are able to have habitat for these
animals while still harvesting trees for our wood and paper products is
that our forests, loggers and land-managers work hard to balance these
needs. They do a pretty good job of it too!
